Made to Entertain Mediterranean

We started working on this project in 2021 with an almost full first floor gut renovation, and have slowly moved through various spaces over the last three years. This home is a prime example of our approach of designing a home for a client’s needs and at a client’s pace. It is so easy to want, and think, that you have to do it all at once, especially when working with a designer, but that isn’t the case. (Sometimes it does make the most sense, but not always.)

This home is expansive, but didn’t feel that way when you walked in. The Dining Room and now Great Room were once four separate spaces, but because the clients regularly entertain very large groups, they wanted the spaces to be wide open. Their dining room houses a table for twenty, so this wasn’t going to fit in just any ol’ space! We needed the dining room to work aesthetically, but also werk! The addition of a bar, and a second fridge with additional cabinetry space, not only helps warm the space up but was also very necessary storage and serving space.

The Great Room was another specific challenge. They wanted seating for up to twenty people that was flexible and easily changed up, while also feeling very inviting and cozy. On a daily basis, this space only needs to seat three to five people, so we needed to serve two very different purposes at once. Ultimately, we landed on two smaller sofas and various chairs, which we love! A pair of smaller swivel chairs, a pair of deeper lounge chairs, and two small sofas gives people various options and who doesn’t love that.

On the far end of the Great Room where the fireplace and piano live, we opted for two recliners for an intimate space that the family would enjoy more individually when they weren’t hosting guests. I mean, how badly do you want this to be your morning coffee spot?

Or as an alternate breakfast spot option, we added this dining height butcher block table to the end of the island. Again, function was the name of the game in this home, but we were not willing to sacrifice aesthetics to make it happen.

The first floor and main living spaces had to be done in the first phase, for cost purposes and sanity purposes, as the house was essentially uninhabitable while this was happening. Once that was complete, they moved back in and enjoyed their home for about a year before we started the second phase! It was time to tackle two guest bedrooms and bathrooms that needed to function specifically to their lifestyle and regular rotation of guests. The client had some conveniences in mind, so we worked together to make it beautiful and bring her functionality dream to life!

Their guests are visiting from various time zones, so it was important to her that they have coffee makers and refrigerators for those jet lagged early mornings or late nights. We also wanted to be sure they had adequate space to unpack and really feel at home, so we added large drawers to the vanities and plenty of counter space! We spent a lot of time talking through every inch of this project and considering exactly who would be visiting, what they might need, and how to make the spaces function best for everyone!

Tell us About Your Project!

We still have an entire second floor of this home to go! We have big, beautiful visions for the Primary Bathroom, her daughter’s en suite bathroom, and giving her heavily used laundry room some new life! We love long term client relationships and are so honored to be part of the story of their home. These clients are the perfect example of taking it at their own pace, trusting us as designers, and working together to get the best result possible.

We would love to help you bring your visions to life as well! Click below to inquire and see if we are a good fit!
